To facilitate a seamless transition, attendees at the BCCI’s 93rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Bengaluru on Sunday asked current secretary Jay Shah to expedite the selection of his replacement. To assume leadership of the ICC for a three-year term beginning on December 1, Shah is anticipated to relinquish his position during the final week of November.
Although choosing a new secretary was not on the agenda for the AGM, it has been discovered that the participants talked among themselves about the succession plan.
A representative of the state association who attended the AGM told PTI, “It was a normal request to keep all due processes in place as soon as possible as [then] there will be clarity for us.”
Candidates for Shah’s successor include Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel, BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar, joint-secretary Devajit Saikia, and president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association Rohan Jaitley.
The appointment of India’s two ICC representatives was the main agenda item for the AGM. Shah now represents the BCCI on the ICC Board, and Arun Dhumal, the chairman of the Indian Premier League, fills the same position on the Chief Executives’ Committee.
The AGM tasked the general body members to propose two names as soon as possible for the positions. Arun Dhumal and Avishek Dalmiya were voted general body delegates to the IPL Governing Council (GC). Dhumal will remain the league’s chairman until at least IPL 2025.
The Indian Cricketers Association (ICA) nominated former Andhra cricketer V Chamundeshwarnath as a player representative, and he was inducted into the IPL GC.
The AGM also approved the yearly budget for the 2024–25 season, and the participants overwhelmingly approved a motion to preserve BCCI’s legal standing as a society—which had not been on the agenda at first.
