Josh Inglis was selected as captain for the three-match T20I series against Pakistan, marking his first time as Australia’s captain. Last Monday, Australia’s selectors revealed the T20I team but did not name the team’s captain.
As usual, captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith will miss the 50-over match to prepare for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy; the 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batter will also captain the team in the final ODI against Pakistan.
Due to Travis Head and regular captain Mitchell Marsh’s paternity leave, Inglis assumes the role of captain for the Twenty20 Internationals. Inglis will be the 30th captain of Australia in the ODI format and the 14th captain in the T20I format.
“Josh is a highly respected player on and off the field and an essential member of the ODI and T20I teams,” stated George Bailey, the national selection panel chairman.
Senior players Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, as well as players like Matt Short and Adam Zampa, will provide Josh with excellent assistance.”
With the senior players scheduled to take a break, Australia’s team for the ODI match against Pakistan in Perth has been expanded to include wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe and pacers Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson.
