Is PCB Agreeing to Adopt a Hybrid Model for the ICC Champions Trophy?

In the recent news related to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the cricket authorities of Pakistan have taken the final and firm decision. ‘Hybrid model for the tournament’s schedule is not accepted’, says the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The Champions Trophy is one of the most prestigious ICC events held every 2-3 years. It is known for showcasing the top eight cricketing nations from around the world competing for the title of champions, displaying top-tier entertainment and sports enthusiasm.

While Pakistan has been excited to host the tournament this season, India’s resistance from travelling across the border has put all the excitement into vain. The logistics of competition are in total disarray.

ICC has called for a virtual meeting only today. The agenda of this meeting is to come up with a conclusion and make a firm decision related to the tournament’s schedule and logistics. There are options the officials would be discussing during the meeting, including.

  • A hybrid model where most matches would be played in Pakistan with only those including India would be scheduled at a neutral location.
  • The tournament gets completely shifted outside Pakistan. However, the hosting rights would remain with the PCB.
  • The tournament is scheduled inside Pakistan excluding the participation of India.

The last option is totally out of the question given the financial consequences the tournament will have to face in case India moves out. Also, in a meeting held on Thursday, PCB completely denied the hybrid model.

They have told ICC to come up with an acceptable solution in today’s meeting. While there seem to be very few acceptable options, let’s hope for the best as we look forward to today’s meeting.
